What Do We Not Know About Medical Cannabis

Medical cannabis, or medical marijuana, is when the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant is used to help treat illness or symptoms. This can include a pure extract as well, but It is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yet. There are two medications based on it that are allowed through. More research needs to be done when it comes to medical marijuana. This is because it is considered a Schedule I controlled substance which makes it illegal. It can be hard to get approval to study uses for this because of this fact which is sad because it has such great potential to help heal others.

What Is Medical Marijuana?

The marijuana plant or its chemicals are meant to treat an illness or disease. It is like usual recreational marijuana, but it is not smoked for the high. It is smoked for the medicinal uses.

The part of marijuana that can get people high is the chemical THC. That chemical is not necessarily as high in the amount in medical marijuana as the recreational kind. This is because the point isn’t the high but the special chemicals in it.

What Is Medical Marijuana Used For?

There are many conditions that medical marijuana is known to help. These include:

–    Alzheimer’s disease

–    Appetite loss

–    Cancer

–    Crohn’s disease

–    Eating disorders such as anorexia

–    Epilepsy

–    Glaucoma

–    Mental health conditions like schizophrenia and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

–    Multiple sclerosis

–    Muscle spasms

–    Nausea

–    Pain

–    Wasting syndrome

There isn’t scientific proof to back this up yet though.

How Does It Help?

All the chemicals that makeup cannabis are called cannabinoids. There are 100s of them in the marijuana plant. They are chemicals that are close to the kind naturally in our body that can control appetite and memory and movement and pain.

There is research that has proven cannabinoids can help:

–    Reduce anxiety

–    Reduce inflammation and relieve pain

–    Control nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy

–    Kill cancer cells and slow tumor growth

–    Relax tight muscles in people with MS

–    Stimulate appetite and improve weight gain in people with cancer and AIDS

It is commonly said that more research should be done into the effects of cannabis oil because it has been known to affect some cancers. Some people claim cannabis oil cures cancer and many other problems.

Can Medical Marijuana Help With Seizures?

Medical marijuana has been used a lot recently to help control seizures, especially in children. For many people, there are no drugs that work to help their seizures, but medical marijuana has done wonders. There is one drug that is FDA approved called Epidiolex.

Medical marijuana has been approved in many different states, but it hasn’t made it all across the United States just yet. Hopefully, soon it will be approved so that wonderful effects of the cannabinoids can be used by everyone equally.
